Since leaving school, the search for what truly made me happy has certainly been a difficult one. Some career choices don't always turn out to be what you expect, and although having spent many years learning the hard way, I don't regret a single one. I gained valuable life experience! And if I never ventured down those paths, I certainly wouldn't be here writing this blog to tell you that.
In the past 8 years, I have gone from apprentice to a licensed aircraft engineer at KLM UK Engineering, only to realise that life's too short and I need to be striving towards what will make me happy! In the 4 years of my apprenticeship I acquired the knowledge behind what keeps the aircraft flying, the cultures of the aviation industry, how the business runs, how it makes money, and the teamwork that holds it all up. With only 2 positions promised at the end of the apprenticeship, I worked really hard to ensure my place by passing all my exams, and completing my diploma.
I then spent another 4 years working for KLM as an aircraft mechanic. I was responsible for the work I was carrying out, and not only making the company money but ensuring people's safety! Being able to work independently and as a team was necessary to ensure deadlines were met and the aircraft flew out as soon as possible. Following instructions and documenting work carried out was done rigorously. In my final year at the company I was leading small teams, playing to their strengths and weaknesses, planning jobs in advance by allocating manpower/materials in line with other departments and teams.
Although none of my creative flair was put to good use, the skills I acquired can be transferred to any position
With my career path leading me down to 3D Art/VFX, I'll finally be able to express my ideas, implement my skills and experience, and bring a lot of potential to each project given before me.
WOAH! You have so much experience, it all sounds amazing :O
